POSITION AT END OF ROUND 8

Valid words: (rover ears lank rice end ail ale alms art hone ill link lover otter)

POINTS:
ZHero........................ 4 (end)
mathsyperson........... 20 (ail ale alms art hone ill link lover otter)
JaneFairfax............... 1

Yes, I am sure mathsyperson has cracked this puzzle, much to my delight.
One of his ten words only is not valid: "silence."
In this connection I must recall that the second word submitted by ZHero, in his first list, was "right."
Bearing this in mind, mathsyperson's 9 valid words not only meet the criteria, but also define them - an elegant touch.

All players, old or new, are welcome to continue with this game, or to submit lists at any future time.

Hi gurthbruins,

Now that I've got 10 valid words, do I stop posting lists?

Nice game, by the way. Simple, as you said...but tricky, just the same! dizzy

Thanks for the compliment! You can stop or go on, it doesn't really matter either way I think. The thing is to discover the rule, the points are there for those who want them. The game continues for the sake of giving others the opportunity to make the discovery too.

Re: Word Game #66

Hi gurthbruins,

I'd like to make a suggestion about the adjudicating dictionary you use for this game - and maybe other such games - that you consider changing it to the online version of the Collins Official Scrabble Dictionary, found here.

It checks words up to and including 15 letters in length, contains a very large word list and is an easily-accessible standard for us all.

If you agree to that, I should mention that a small number of words that were previously disallowed would now be deemed valid...which may (or may not! smile ) help others to find the hidden rule.

Re: Word Game #66

Thanks for the suggestion, phrontister. I agree on the merit of having an easily-accessible authority.
But I do not wish my games to become a test of word knowledge, but rather a test of intuition and logic.
For that reason I would favour the smallest dictionary possible.

I would rather that players restricted their words to commonly used words. There will always be more than enough of such words to enable my games to be played properly. These games do not at all require a great vocabulary of arcane words, as scrabble does.
And I would like to keep it that way. Hoping you will understand.

Re: Word Game #66

Yes, I do. I like that. smile

As you've found already, not all submissions are in the POD, but those occasions will be rare because despite its small size it is quite comprehensive. I have an old electronic version of it that I used to check my words before I posted the list.

Re: Word Game #66

Well done, ZHero, you finally join the champs. Nine out of ten is totally convincing, "able" is incorrect and I can't fathom why you included it, but that's your prerogative. Maybe as the zbumi necessary to art!

I think phrontister's and ZHero's final lists also define the rule.

- Those were fun days; I've now become more active with these games once more.

My challenging word games have been solved about six or seven times.

Two solvers emerged from a writer's forum, one from a chess forum, and recently, two from a UKDebate forum.

It would be nice if all these aces could see my newest puzzles, and maybe be not so lonely as they've always been up to now.

I'm inviting you, and will invite them all, to go to my new forum dedicated specially to such puzzles:  http://afroditi.proboards.com .

There  I'll keep some puzzles going. There are no chores of registration - guests can post and start threads - , but of course you would be most welcome to register.

Hope to see you there!
Gurth.

Hi wintersolstice!

Glad to see some renewed interest in my puzzles.

After two years I am finding that this puzzle has been well covered and come to a desirable end. I suggest we go on to new puzzles.
If any of the solvers of this one wish to help you on with it, they are welcome to take it over, however.

I am creating new puzzles now, appearing on my site as mentioned above, and I will put them on other sites as well, the same puzzles and different ones. Anything to increase interest.

See "Word Game 23c" on this thread, coming up in the next hour.

Re: Word Game #66

Hi stefy,

I've solved it (see previous posts), but I shouldn't give out the answer. The OP should do that, if he wants to.

I don't mind marking your word lists for you, though, if you'd like to play on...so I'll subscribe to this post just in case.

Re: Word Game #66

Hi wintersolstice,

There are no valid words in your list.

I'll change the scoring system to one point for each valid word, and as before, each valid word you get will show on your score line.

Valid words so far (35):
a ace ail ale alms ant art early ears eel end hew hi hone ill inch lane lank lead link lover luck lucky older otter our raising ray reposition residence rice ride rose rover utters

SCORE:
wintersolstice......... 0
anonimnystefy....... 0

You may have seen my previous post - the one to stefy.

Well, I don't mind continuing on from gurthbruins with marking lists for you...for a while at least.

As phronister is kindly continuing this game for a while, and since I don't want the solution made public (for obvious reasons, it makes it impossible to continue the game elsewhere as well as here), please advise whether you would like me to PM the solution to you, or whether you want to play on with phron and ws.
