They do not have to be open. A single line drawn through that triangle will generate two shapes. Either two triangles or a triangle and a quadrilateral. I guarantee there is a solution.

if that's the case then look at it this way:

let LSL be the length of the line segment.

the totel perimeter of the original triangle is 24.you want the perimeter of the two shapes to be 12 each.now,their combined perimeter (which equals 24) is the perimeter of the original triangle plus 2*LSL.
so:
24=24+2*LSL

from here LSL is 0.

I do not see what is wrong with the wording. Cut that triangle into two shapes and there can be 2 shapes with P = 12 and A = 12.

here too! although it doesn't seem like the case here,let's suppose that the perimeters of both shapes are 12.so the combined perimeter of both would be the perimeter of the big triangle plus the double length of the line segment that divides them.
so:
per1+per2=per0+LSL
12+12=24+LSL
24=24+LSL
LSL=0

Actually the program messed up and spit out a solution that it should not have. I must have failed to clear a variable or something. Anyway, I did not see the error until I was about to post it.
