Re: Is this cool with you?

That is a great idea that Neil Sloane and Simon Pflouffe came up with. Lots of times I just surf around in there seeing what I can find. I am going to get some sleep, see you in a bit.

Re: Is this cool with you?

New Problem:

Three runners start on the same spot of a circular track. They are called B,C and D. The ratio of their speeds is 3:5:7 respectively. We assume a constant speed around the track and they run in a clockwise fashion.

How many times will C and D lap B before they all meet up at the same point? Where is this first point of triple intersection?

A says)Using braids I come up with this formula for the triple intersection point.

Where v3 is D's speed,
v2 is C's speed and v1 is B's speed.

So the first point of triple intersection is at the original starting point.

B says) That is not correct. That is one of them but it is not the first.
C says)Wrong again B! A is on the money as usual.
D says) I say there is never any point where the 3 of them are together other than when they begin the race.
E says) I am not sure how many times they pass B but I know A's point of triple intersection is not correct.

Can you answer all the questions and come up with a better formula than A has?

Re: Is this cool with you?

Hi,

In #1255, you asked for 1:2:4  !

Re: Is this cool with you?

Hi gAr;

That makes sense! What the heck is wrong with me anyway? I ask for things and then forget about them. My apologies. Answer does seem to agree with your formula too. I will have to mark you correct!

Hi bobbym,

No problem, thanks.
I'll try for few more examples.

Re: Is this cool with you?

I think that formula is fine for more number of points.
Verified for 4 points at ratio 3:5:7:13

Hi bobbym,

Yes, a nice formula and geogebra animation!
Thanks!

Hi,

I thought of relative velocities, but saw the formula from the question and extended it.

I'll take a break, see you later.

Re: Is this cool with you?

New problem:

Someone posed to our distinguished panel the following problem:

he wanted to know what the biggest coefficient was.

A says) Obviously it is 10^40.
B says) That is not correct A, how did you get that?
C says) I got that too.
D says) Yep, I counted them!
E says) I have to agree with B on this one.

What is the correct answer? Is it possible to come up with a general formula for n instead of 20000000?
