Why is that?

I don't know.Maybe because he was always behind Euler.Whatever Euler did this one also did, but worse.

Not exactly. He along with Descartes is the father of Analytical geometry. He and Pascal did the first work that we now call Probaility. He developed a rudimentary calculus before Newton and Leibniz. As a number theorist he was one of the best that ever lived.

Still, I think lesser of him that of other mathematicians.Maybe that's just because in our literature he is very much presented as a guy who was often wrong.

About his answers to some problems. Most of them are said to have their first answers given correctly by Euler.

Those were to conjectures he formed. That does not detract from his many great contributions. If he was not one of the great mathematicians of all time, he certainly was the greatest amateur one.

That may be.I also wonder why I always mixed Gauss and Euler.

New problem!
A gambler plays a game with a rookie. They agree to flip a coin with an even money payoff. That is, if the gambler bets .25 he wins .25 on heads and loses .25 on tails. The coin is biased with P(heads) = .53 and P(tails)=.47. The gambler takes heads and the rookie takes tails. If the gambler loses all his money the game is over. The gambler has been running bad so his bankroll is only one dollar! What fraction of the gamblers bankroll should he bet on each flip to maximize his profit?
A says)Ridiculous question. Bet it all each time! You have the edge. More money bet means bigger profit.
B says)Not necessarily, there is a mathematical rule that
C says)Oh, shut up B. A is correct. Bet it all each time!
D says) I have heard of that rule, but I do not understand it.
E says) It is silly to bet it all. You could lose on the first bet and make nothing at all. The correct idea is to try not to go broke. Then you will earn a steady profit.
What would you do?
