Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

Hi Shivam;

Actually, Fermat hammered out some of details before both Newton or Leibniz.

Supposedly, but Leibniz seems to have a head start on Integral Calc before Newton.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

I disagree. Newton had it about 20 years before the big L. He didn't publish though. Newton's fluxion notation was definitely inferior to Leibniz's dy/dx.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

Leibniz and Newton supposebly shared letters describing their discoveries. But the only reason Newton is so popular is because of the Britishers.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

At the time Newton was convinced that Leibniz stole his work. Leibniz made a visit to England...

Also, in Europe Leibniz was more popular than Newton because of the Bernoulli's.

Europe vs British. That is why Europe, at that certain point in time, was much furthur advanced then the latter.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

Maybe but although they both discovered Calculus there was no question that Newton was the better problem solver. At the time he was the best in the world.

No doubt about that. Just tribulations over who discovered Calculus.

I think they both tarnished their reputations over that silly argument. They lived very far away from each other so the stealing idea seems farfetched.

True. However, as I said, they often shared notes concerning their discoveries. Also, do you have to wait 60 seconds between posts, or does the rule no apply to staff? It is so annoying...

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

My Project? .... Thanks for asking
Well, I finished it in the month of June
I chose Pythagoras, Turing and Fionacci. (Though I realised that I should have taken someone other than Turing, Newton wasn't available; it was taken by the other groups)
Now, er... I did my best about Fibonacci but my other Group Members were N00bs. The girl whom I told to write the Mathematical contribution of Pythagoras did not even explain the least about the Pythagoras Theorem. #shock
When I ask a few of my people why they did this, they tell, "This was available in the Net".
@Shivamcoder3013, If you are an Indian you must be aware how bad the education system is in our country.

It was the project of our first Formative Assesment. We had to do the Second Formative Assesment Project a few months ago, Remember Heron's?

Hi Agnishom;

How bad can it be? gAr, ganesh, howard and you all turned out pretty darn good.

Do you know that India has the second largest population of english speaking people?

And yet, this article backs up your thoughts:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home … 492508.cms

If newspaper reporting in India is anything like it is in the US we can see why that report may be inaccurate.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

I think our Project on Heron's Formula was best for it had elements which no other group (I mean no other group without my help) had. E.g., The Proof, The BrahmaGupta Formula, the Isoperimetric Property,etc.
Still our teachers wont consider it to be the best, as they only want Heavy Decoration(which I would not do because it is not my Ideology)
This time I could not count on those People. I directly spoon fed them the data they should write down.

To explain abut our education system and the non-interest of my fellow members, I shall give two examples:
1. I asked a girl to write a page about deriving the formula of Isosceles and Equilateral Triangle from Heron's Formula. Here's what she wrote:

Cases of Heron's Formulae
The Heron's Formulae states:
In a right triangle, with sides(legs)a and b and c
A right triangle with one angle(an angle of 90)
We start with a right triangle(in gold) with a, b and c. We then find its semiperimeter(s) respectively.
We can find the area of the given triangle.
We now sum up the triangle:

Believe me, this is exactly what she wrote(except for the formatting, ofcourse)
2. I am attaching a image of my computer project. It is self explanatory

P.S.: Perhaps this points are endless, but forgive me for adding another:
3. Even The spelling of 'Mathematics' in our File's first page is 'Mathamatics'
sad When I criticise people, I feel sorry because AlokaSarkar S. tells me to find faults in my self rather than others. If she is reading this post, I ask her for forgiveness

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

Hi;

Do you realize how few American students there are regularly on this forum? Or any math forum for that matter.

When I criticise people, I feel sorry because AlokaSarkar S. tells me to find faults in my self rather than others.

She is correct but sometimes criticism is necessary. Sometimes you have to see what is unpleasant about something or someone in order to avoid it yourself.

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

Hi Bobbym;

In India, the system tells you to attend school and study for marks, not knowledge. As a result, people try only to mug up things not learn them. E.g, I remember the incident three years ago:

We are taught a subject called Environmental Science, where they teach you about conservation, greenhouse effects, global warming, waste management, etc. At that time a huge hall was used as our classroom of which in one half the students used to seat and the other half used to be empty. Yet the fans and lights were kept running on the other part even when the Environmental Science classes were going on

So if this is their condition, is Environmental Science actually helping us at all?

Er..,
      I do not know how I could distinguish between American and other type of students in the Forum. The forum doesn't give any info about nationality.
Did you see the "Microsoft Processor"?

P.S. for your conveninence Post #91 was a continuation of #89
and post #93 was a reply to #90
and this is the reply to #92

Re: Can you suggest six names of great mathematicians quickly?

I believe your country is rated number 4 in the world in carbon dioxide production. Of course, my country ranks number 1. Not a good stat at all.

The answer to your question is no. People are more wasteful than ever. The situation you describe where grades count more than knowledge is the standard here.

Go out from among them and be ye separate.
