Oh, I get it. Nice one, but harder than the other ones. I tried forming a recursive formula by removing two adjacent cards from the circle.

Hmmmm.

You have 4 boxes. You can toss balls one at a time to the boxes until any one of them has 3 balls in it, and then you stop.
The tosses are independent, and each bin is equally likely to be hit. It's impossible to not make it in a bin on any given toss.
What is the expected number of tosses so that 1 bin has 3 balls in it?

Btw, I am looking at a paper that uses the notation I{X<=3} and then uses a property from which they deduce that E I{X<=3}=P{X<=3}. Do you have an idea what the I represents?
