Btw, that's much better than saying to someone as they're leaving, "Good to see your back"!

Just ignore me if you don't understand that...but it mainly has to do with using the apostrophe in English grammar. The use or omission of an apostrophe can change the meaning of a sentence dramatically.

Greengrocer's and greengrocers apostrophe. smile

Miles 'Pops' Green's grocer's fliers' error's obvious in "Banana's for sale: $5/kilo".

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

Hi Sarah,

Yes, that made me go cross-eyed this morning too when I looked at it again after having written it last night! dizzy

Before I tell you what it means I'll let stefy read it first (if he hasn't already) and comment on it if he wants to, but if I don't hear from him I'll write back.

I was just playing around with apostrophes again, that's all. My aim was to write something that obeyed grammar rules but at the same time didn't make sense when someone first looked at it.

Grammar is quite interesting, but it takes more than a lifetime to learn it properly! You'd even need to be older than bobbym!! eek

Is that the reason my grammar is so bad other than she was married to my grandpa? Since I can never be older than myself, I am doomed to bad grammar...

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

Hi Bobby,

Aren't there two bobbyms? I think I recall you referring to another bobbym on some occasions. And aren't they essentially the same bobbym?

So...are you the older one or the younger one? If older, and you two are essentially the same person, there may be some hope yet for an improvement in your grammar.

And I wouldn't go blaming your bad grammar on your grammar! shame

Aren't there two bobbyms?

The plan was for there to be millions of bobbym's. That way everyone would be able to see him. What joy would have been known by all the people of the earth to know a bobbym was within arms reach. To bump into him around every corner.

Alas, it was not to be. The m's everywhere were hunted down and destroyed. I am the last of my kind. The last m.

Explanation:

Miles Green (affectionately known as 'Pops') has a grocer whose fliers all have an obvious error: the inclusion of the apostrophe in "Banana's".

"Green's" and "grocer's" are singular possessive, and "fliers' " is plural possessive, while "error's" is a contraction of "error is".

Well, compared to big people they're little.

Haven't measured them, though. Because of their shyness they scoot away in a hurry when they see me in the neighbourhood.

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

Alas, if that only were true.

As an eyewitness to the demise of the bobbym's I wrote this poem as they were slaughtered by humanity.

Cannon to the left of them
Cannon to the right of them
Cannon in front of them
Stormed at by shot and shell
While horse and bobbym fell
Boldly they rode and well
Into the jaws of death
Into the mouth of hell

Brings tears to my eyes to recount the tale.

I see that phrontister has left the forum. Undoubtedly too teary eyed to continue this morbid discussion of the massacre.

Ahem, ahem.

So they were slaughtered in the Crimean War! And what were you doing there, about 160 years ago?!

Or is the poem you 'wrote' pure plagiarism?

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

I imagine you are referring to the plagiarist Alfred Lord Tennyson. Alfred, then a close friend of the m's and also witnessed the massacre and was inspired to write a poem of his own later on.

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

Yes, he's the one I'm referring to...but I didn't know he could play the guitar.

And you didn't answer my first question, about you being there. If you weren't there, did you have an eye transplant from someone who was actually there for you to have been an eyewitness to the massacre?

And furthermore, I thought you said that millions of bobbyms were slaughtered; but then you mention the demise of something or other (which you didn't go on to describe) belonging to just one bobbym:

As an eyewitness to the demise of the bobbym's I wrote this poem....

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

To clear up the confusion there were never millions of bobbym's. No matter how desirable that might have been it was just a dream. At their height the sect numbered no more than 600 or so.

The m's have existed for hundreds of years. Pappym, grandpappym, etc all looked exactly alike. Why shouldn't they? They were all clones. That massacre reduced the number of us to a mere pittance. Until now there is only one remaining.

(That should be "Doffs his hat", without the apostrophe, otherwise it would mean "Doff is his hat". I wanted to get in before the Grammar Nazi.)

Had to look up Casey. Didn't know that poem because it wasn't by Banjo Paterson, but it was along the same lines as some of his and smacked a bit of similar style.

Hatequette, including doffing the hat.

Re: A very nice "joke"! ! !

No, not before today when you mentioned it. I liked the poem...quite my style.

Banjo Paterson is by far my favourite poet:
The Man From Snowy River
Clancy of The Overflow
Mulga Bill's Bicycle
Johnson's Antidote

Those are some of my favourites, and I also like Paterson's response to Henry Lawson's Borderland.
Read Lawson's first, and then Paterson's In Defence of the Bush.

I've got Banjo Paterson's 2-volume set of his complete works: Singer of the Bush (1885-1900) and Song of the Pen (1901-1941). Terrific reading! smile
