Banned. Why are people banned?

I really want to know why a person in MIF is banned. Everything needs a reason, especially in banning. MathsIsFun, I suggest this.

Re: Banned. Why are people banned?

hi julianthemath

The forum has rules.  These are to protect other members (especialy young ones) and to maintain the reputation of the site.

Until I became a moderator I didn't have any idea just how many attempts were being made to mis-use the site.  I asked bobbym to send me a sample of users who were breaking the rules and he sent a small sample from the previous 24 hours, running to hundreds of names.  It was quite a shock.

Some just use the site for free adverising something that has nothing to do with math.  That will get them banned.  More serious are the users who post offensive material.  I won't say what the link was, but one of my first bans was a person who had done this and left a link to a most unsuitable site.  That's why there are restrictions on new members .... it doesn't totally prevent such mis-use, but it does make it harder as the person has to make a number of posts before they can add links etc.

These steps mean that the site is kept suitable for all proper users.

And the moderator imposing the ban has to give a reason.  These are not published to the whole forum.  Bans can be undone if an mistake is made.

Re: Banned. Why are people banned?

Hi julianthemath;

Bob has covered the reasons why members are banned. Regular members are rarely banned.

The number one reason is rudeness to other members and moderators. This is not tolerated. Many warnings are given before any action is taken.

Re: Banned. Why are people banned?

Hi;

There are not many banned members. Most people come in here to do some math and socialize a bit. You have to be a colossal jerk to get banned.

Re: Banned. Why are people banned?

Hi;

Breaking the rules. Bad behaviour. Not listening to the moderators. Posting advertisements or math. Calling other members names. That about covers it.

Re: Banned. Why are people banned?

Not sure if it is still that bad.  MIF took some steps to make an extra restriction.

bobbym will know more.
