Why do the links go in the current tab? Why not open the link in a new tab? I suggest this.

If you are using IE you can hold down the control key as you click a link to get a new tab. I expect other browsers do a similar thing.
If the default was to always start a new tab, I expect some people would get fed up with a screen full of windows and would be asking for the setting to be put back.
