hello friends 
well i have started studying carbon and its compounds,but i could not clear my concept on ketone.
pls help me out.

Hi;
We are also reading the same NCERT chapter in school.
Ketone is just a functional group which contains a carbon atom holding an oxygen with 2 hands and two other carbons with two other seperate hands.
E.g,
H H

H - C - C - C - H
| || |
H O H
That contains three carbons, so it is propanone. Had it been four, we would call it butanone.
The main common feature of all ketones is that they have this functional group inside them.

***DO NOT CONFUSE KETONES WITH ALDEHIDES***
Now, comes aldehydes, which are similar but in the case of aldehydes, the two hands of the carbon hold one carbon and one hydrogen.
E.g,

H - C - C - C = O

This is propanal.
Note that both of them have the formula C[sub]3[/sub]H[sub]6[/sub]O
But the structure matters too

i was really confused between aldehyde and ketone that why they have same formula inspite of different functional groups and you cleared it all.

Note to Agnishom: To get esters, just take H from the OH group of the carboxilyc acid and the whole OH group from the alchohol and join the remainders together. You will also get water as a product.
