M takes the lead again. At the wolfram demonstration page there are thousands of apps. From games to astronomy.

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

Hi;

Do you have an idea of how I could learn Maxima?

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

You should take some math problems and do them in Maxima.

Learning Maxima's functions isn't the hard part, there are always the man pages. The hard part is using them correctly, which is true for any CAS.

I agree, start learning now how to use your computer to help with your math.

Maybe you have some?

I recommend Bafflers, Series, What do you think and Is this cool with you threads to begin with. That should keep your hands full for a while. smile

I heartily recommend the problems in computer math especially the ones solved by geogebra!

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

But I am a complete Novice in this field, even if I pick a problem I won't understand how to do it with Maxima

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

Everybody starts as a complete novice, most stay there. Some do graduate to the position of student.

You do not have to force it. Start slowly and on problems you have done already. First you must convince yourself that it really works.

That is true but in order to start learning it correctly, I need to have a tutorial on how to make the language work(in some way, not necessarily the optimal).

Maxima has limited documentation and no forums that I know of. You will have to experiment.

Stefy already knows the amount of Maxima I need to know to start working. He could shed light

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

Yes he could but a CAS is not a spectator sport. It is not a bunch of lectures given by a professor. It is a hands on thing. You have to get your hands dirty then we can help.

I am now going to cook some chicken cacciatore, Angela style. see you afterwards. Have a good day at school, study hard.

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

I know but not unless I understand its syntax and how it is programmed, I will need some lectures. For example, I do not understand the loops, string processing, type conversation, etc in Maxima

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

I will go over them with you but remember you will be using it as a CAS and will have little need for those procedural goodies.

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

The thing I hate about Maxima, now that I've used M for a while, is that it doesn't have a few functions ehich are a must, such as Select, Total, etc.

Re: Teach us some Maxima!

You can program them and include them in the maxima initialisation file.

I will go over them with you but remember you will be using it as a CAS and will have little need for those procedural goodies.

Suppose I am asked Find the number of 4 digit palindromes that are divisible by 7, then I'll need string processing
