You undoubtedly used the methods of ordinary algebra but there are many numerical ways to get the answer too.

I know two ordinary algebra methods and one numerical method and also the CAS way and also the graphical way and also a brute force way, Newton Raphson, Midpoint attack if they count

There are many ways to solve equations numerically. The interesting one here is doing x_0=... x_n=3+1/x_n-1. It can even be done on a scientific calculator.

I would convert it back to a quadratic equation and use the quadratic formula.
I've always changed those continued things into a quadratic and then solved it, never tried the other way round

Those are methods that have names and use geometric ideas. They are very popular in books written by people whom never solved anything other than a book problem.
