I get the "fungi" all the time when working numerical stuff in M. The fungi part most often appears next to the imaginary number, so the answer appears to be complex, when it is, in fact, real.

That is correct. It takes some experience in spotting it. It happens in newtons iteration. A small fungus will force Newton's onto the complex plane.
