A minor alternative that can make the calculus a little easier:
Question: it was pretty easy to guess how to hide the solution, but how do you get alternative text other "Hidden Text"?

Hi eigenguy,
...how do you get alternative text other "Hidden Text"?
After "[hide", type "=", followed immediately by the text of your choice and the closing bracket ']'.
Here...I'll try it with "minor alternative" in the hide box:
Just click on 'Quote' in the bottom right-hand corner of my post to see what I did.

Thanks, I had no idea how to do it either.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Thanks!
It's been a while since been in a forum. It's embarrassing that I'd forgotten about the quote trick!
Nice!

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Hi;
Did you see my completely original answer. I trust that JFF would like it.

Is it not the same thing I posted?

Can I remind everyone that the title of this thread is Easy puzzle challenge. Therefore if your solution is messy and complicated, youre on the wrong tack.
Yet, that's harder than what's shown in #31

I guess DeMoivre's and Vieta's is a bit of an overkill but maths is all about solving problems in different ways.

You think that is easy?

Yeah, proofs of even simple results can sometimes be a bit messy.
Still true today as it was then. Anyway, how about another problem.

You'd better add "monic" to your description of f, or else it can't be proved, since for any a, af(x) is another polynomial with the same roots.
