Donations and Gold Membership
I think having a place for donations would be a good idea as a lot of people would probably donate. And many forums have incentives like gold membership (custom title, avatar, no ads etc).

2. Why do you want the equality between the members to be compromised?

I wouldn't say it's badly needed, but it could help pay for hosting and other costs. I can't really see how equality would be compromised. Anyway, it wouldn't be more compromised than it already is due to rankings like "Star Member."

Rankings like a "Star Member" cannot be bought by money.
What opportunities will the Gold Members get?

I would probably pay (I don't really care about the rank, but for supporting the forum and the main site). I don't really know incentives for being a gold member, but something like no ads, avatar, being set invisible, custom title, signature, chat access, profile photo, amount of messages limit, who's online, user notes, boolean searching etc.

I am opposed to it because for one thing some members would object. If the forum ever needed some help then this would become an issue. I click on ads because that is one means of generating income for the place. If the need arose with our large membership other sponsors would like to advertise here.

Donations can be accepted but that should not come in return for privileges. What if a poor guy who makes quality posts needs those features but cannot?
You can consider creating a page for accepting donations instead and a page that will have a list of the donors. That is probably okay.
