It is sometimes called the logarithmic law. The legend is that Benford an astronomer first noticed the law when he noticed that in old books of tables the list beginning with one were the most faded. As if they were the most used.
In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

Yes I heard that one too, and find it a fascinating example of how some people can notice things and go on to discoveries. But trying to explain what a log table is seemed a little hard for this page.

Excellent page!
With the common logartthms, the number of digits can be found in simpe way.
I often used this to compute the number of digits of operations like
with powers of elementary numbers.Further, knowledge of the units digit is of paramount importance. Sum and product in Vedic Mathematics can led to interesting and important results.
