Apparently someone bid up to $3,000 - for a country with a current account balance of -$8,000,000,000 (2005 est), that may have been quite brave!  (In other words, an 8 billion dollar loss)

Hmmm ... maybe they were planning on creating some "efficiencies" in the economy so it would make a profit?
