Re: General Quiz

Hi bobbym,

The Answers #5719 (Isthmus) and #5720 (Strait) are correct! Excellent, bobbym!

#5721. Name the capital and the second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (the most populous being Dubai), and also capital of this emirate, the largest of the UAE's seven member emirates. It lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city proper had a population of 1.5 million in 2014. It is the fourth most expensive city for exatriate employees in the region, and in 2014 was the 68th most expensive big city in the world. Fortune magazine and CNN stated in 2007 that it is the richest city in the world, having been between $800 billion to approximately $875 billion USD. The Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute puts the figure at US$773 billion.

#5722. Name the country in Western Asia. Situated in the northern edge of Eastern Arabia at the tip of the Persian Gulf, it shares borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia. As of 2014, it has a population of 4.1 million people; 1.2 million are from this nation and 2.8 million are expatriates. is a constitutional emirate with a high income economy backed by the world's sixth largest oil reserves. It is the highest valued currency in the world.

Re: General Quiz

Hi bobbym,

The Answers #5721 (Abu Dhabi) and #5722 (Kuwait) are correct! Marvelous!

#5523. Name  the country in Southern Africa. It is the seventh-largest country in Africa, and is bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to west. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At 1,246,620 square kilometers (481,321 sq mi), it is the world's twenty-third largest country.

#5524,  Name the country on the West African coast. The nation's name means "Land of the Free." It is bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Ivory Coast to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 square kilometres (43,000 sq mi) and is home to 4,503,000 people. It is unique among African countries because it was the only African nation that was colonized and controlled by freed African-Americans and ex-Caribbean slaves as a free state and a homeland to live. This country and Ethiopia were the only two African countries during the 19th century conquest of Africa that were not controlled or colonized by European powers.

Re: General Quiz

Hi bobbym,

#5525. Name the common inorganic chemical reagent, most commonly used as an oxidizing agent in various laboratory and industrial applications. It is acutely and chronically harmful to health. It is a crystalline ionic solid with a very bright, red-orange color. has uses in photography and in photographic screen printing, where it is used as an oxidizing agent together with a strong mineral acid. Because it is non-hygroscopic, it is a common reagent in classical "wet tests" in analytical chemistry.

#5526.  Name the inorganic compound; the compound is used as an explosive in mining, and also sometimes in improvised explosive devices. It is the main component of ANFO, a popular explosive, which accounts for 80% of explosives used in North America. It is used in some instant cold packs, as hydrating the salt is an endothermic process, though it is being phased out of use in many countries due to concerns over its potential for use in improvised explosive devices and the synthesis of illicit substances. It is medicinally used for thyroid blockade, thyroid storm and also as an expectorant.

(Unlucky because losing 6-0, 6-0 is by no yardstick a worthy performance at any level in tennis! Certainly not in a Grand Slam tournament)

6-0 6-0 is actually quite a common score, perhaps the most common score in tennis, happening very frequently at the lower levels of tennis, like in the qualifying rounds for Futures. This is because of the huge differences in levels between opponents at that level, e.g. it's common for #1200 to be pitted against #250, for instance. Nicknamed the "double bagel", it happens occasionally in the bigger events too, on the women's side more often I believe (I'm sure Serena has dished out lots of them). As far as 6-0 sets go, the most shocking in recent memory was during the 3rd round of Wimbledon 2012, when Yaroslava Shvedova became the first player ever to win a golden set against another player at Wimbledon (that is, winning a set without dropping a single point), against Sara Errani of all people, who had just made the French Open final a couple of weeks prior. But back to 6-0 6-0, I think everyone who has ever played tennis competitively has lost 6-0 6-0 multiple times in their early career. Oh, and there's the infamous Federer-Gaudio match at the 2005 TMC (in which the best 8 players in the world participate) where Federer won 6-0 6-0. Gaudio had won a grand slam the previous year!

Re: General Quiz

Hi zetafunc,

Thanks for the information (#35) zetafunc!

The Answer

is correct! Excellent!

#5533. The kelvin is a unit of measure for temperature based upon an absolute scale. It is one of the seven base units in the International System of Units (SI) and is assigned the unit symbol K. The Kelvin scale is an absolute, thermodynamic temperature scale using as its null point absolute zero, the temperature at which all thermal motion ceases in the classical description of thermodynamics. The kelvin is defined as the fraction 1⁄273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water (exactly 0.01 °C or 32.018 °F).In other words, it is defined such that the triple point of water is exactly 273.16 K.

When and there  was the engineer and physicist William Lord Kelvin born?

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #5533 is correct! Good work!

#5534.  Name derived unit of ionizing radiation dose in the International System of Units (SI). It is a measure of the health effect of low levels of ionizing radiation on the human body. Quantities that are measured in these are intended to represent the stochastic health risk, which for radiation dose assessment is defined as the probability of cancer induction and genetic damage.

#5535. Name the SI unit of catalytic activity. It is a derived SI unit for quantifying the catalytic activity of enzymes (measuring the enzymatic activity level in enzyme catalysis) and other catalysts. Its use is recommended by the General Conference on Weights and Measures and other international organizations. It replaces the non-SI enzyme unit. Enzyme units are, however, still more commonly used than it in practice at present, especially in biochemistry.

#5536. Name the SI unit of illuminance and luminous emittance, measuring luminous flux per unit area. It is equal to one lumen per square metre. In photometry, this is used as a measure of the intensity, as perceived by the human eye, of light that hits or passes through a surface. It is analogous to the radiometric unit watts per square metre, but with the power at each wavelength weighted according to the luminosity function, a standardized model of human visual brightness perception.

#5537. The henry (symbol H) is the unit of electrical inductance in the International System of Units. The unit is named after Joseph Henry, the American scientist who discovered electromagnetic induction independently of and at about the same time as Michael Faraday (1791–1867) in England. When and where was he born?

Re: General Quiz

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #5536 (The lux (symbol: lx)) is correct! Good work!

The Answer #5537

#5538.  Name the chemical element with atomic number 27. Like nickel, it in the Earth's crust is found only in chemically combined form, save for small deposits found in alloys of natural meteoric iron. The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal. It is  primarily used as the metal, in the preparation of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys.

#5539.  Name the chemial compound - The hydrated  compound can be extracted from brine or sea water. In North America, it is produced from Great Salt Lake brine. as the natural mineral bischofite, It is also extracted (via solution mining) out of ancient seabeds; for example, the Zechstein seabed in northwest Europe. Some salt is made from solar evaporation of seawater. is most commonly used for dust control and road stabilization. Its second-most common use is ice control. In addition to the production of the metal, the salt also is used for a variety of other applications: fertilizer, mineral supplement for animals, wastewater treatment, wallboard, artificial seawater, feed supplement, textiles, paper, fireproofing agents, cements and refrigeration brine.

Re: General Quiz

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #5540 is correct! Good work!

#5542, Name the is the chemical compound (archaically, corrosive sublimate). A poisonous white crystalline compound, used as an antiseptic and a disinfectant, in insecticides, preservatives, and batteries, and in metallurgy and photography. It was used as a photographic intensifier to produce positive pictures in the collodion process of the 1800s. When applied to a negative, the compound whitens and thickens the image, thereby increasing the opacity of the shadows and creating the illusion of a positive image. was used to disinfect wounds by Arab physicians in the Middle Ages. It continued to be used by Arab doctors into the twentieth century, until modern medicine deemed it unsafe for use.

#5543. Name the inorganic chemical compound used as a corrosion resistant coating on metal surfaces either as part of an electroplating process or applied as a primer pigment. It coats better on a crystalline structure than bare metal, so a seeding agent is often used as a pre-treatment.. This compound  (dental cement) is one of the oldest and widely used cements, and is commonly used for luting permanent metal restorations and as a base for dental restorations. This cement is used for cementation of inlays, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances and occasionally as a temporary restoration.
