Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #1081 (Granuloma) is correct! Marvelous!

#1082. Name the the medical term / phrase - (also known as the auditory tube or pharyngotympanic tube) It is a tube that links the nasopharynx to the middle ear. It is a part of the middle ear. In adult humans the  tube is approximately 35 mm (1.4 in) long. It is named after the sixteenth-century anatomist. It extends from the anterior wall of the middle ear to the lateral wall of the nasopharynx, approximately at the level of the inferior nasal concha. It consists of a bony part and a cartilaginous part.
A portion of the tube (1/3) proximal to the middle ear is made of bone; this bony part is about 12 mm in length. It begins in the carotid wall of the tympanic cavity, below the septum canalis musculotubarii, and, gradually narrowing, ends at the angle of junction of the squama and the petrous portion of the temporal bone, its extremity presenting a jagged margin which serves for the attachment of the cartilaginous portion of the rest of the tube, and this raises a tubal elevation, the torus tubarius, in the nasopharynx where it opens.

#1084. Name the medical term / phrase -  A potentially life-threatening complication in people with diabetes mellitus. It happens predominantly in those with type 1 diabetes, but it can occur in those with type 2 diabetes under certain circumstances. DKA results from a shortage of insulin; in response the body switches to burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies that cause most of the symptoms and complications. DKA may be the first symptom of previously undiagnosed diabetes, but it may also occur in people known to have diabetes as a result of a variety of causes, such as intercurrent illness or poor compliance with insulin therapy. Vomiting, dehydration, deep gasping breathing, confusion and occasionally coma are typical symptoms. What does DKA signify?

#1084. Name the medical term / phrase -  KCS - Also called dry eye syndrome (DES), it is an eye disease caused by eye dryness, which, in turn, is caused by either decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation. It is found in humans and some animals. KCS is the most common eye disease, affecting 5 - 6% of the population. Prevalence rises to 6 - 9.8% in postmenopausal women, and as high as 34% in the elderly.

#1085. Name the medical term - (Also known as dropsy, and hydropsy) It is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitium, located beneath the skin and in the cavities of the body which cause severe pain. Clinically, it manifests as swelling; the amount of interstitial fluid is determined by the balance of fluid homeostasis, and the increased secretion of fluid into the interstitium, or the impaired removal of the fluid can cause it.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

#1087. Name the medical term / phrase - A radiological procedure used to visualize abnormalities of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. An injection of X-ray contrast medium is given to a patient via a needle or cannula into the vein, typically in the arm. The contrast is excreted or removed from the bloodstream via the kidneys, and the contrast media becomes visible on X-rays almost immediately after injection. X-rays are taken at specific time intervals to capture the contrast as it travels through the different parts of the urinary system. This gives a comprehensive view of the patient's anatomy and some information on the functioning of the renal system.
Immediately after the contrast is administered, it appears on an X-ray as a 'renal blush'. This is the contrast being filtered through the cortex. At an interval of 3 minutes, the renal blush is still evident (to a lesser extent) but the calyces and renal pelvis are now visible. At 9 to 13 minutes the contrast begins to empty into the ureters and travel to the bladder which has now begun to fill. To visualize the bladder correctly, a post micturition X-ray is taken, so that the bulk of the contrast (which can mask a pathology) is emptied. An IVP can be performed in either emergency or routine circumstances.
