Its really amazing and unbelievable!!!

There is a maths website http://www.murderousmaths.co.uk which has interesting information about maths. In there is a page "Riverboat Lil reads your mind " which really reads out your mind. Its really unbelievable. Here's the link http://www.murderousmaths.co.uk/games/m … /index.htm. Just  check it out!!!

Re: Its really amazing and unbelievable!!!

EM stands for Experimental Math.

Explode in this case means he is so frustrated he is about to have a reaction. Nobody really explodes except in those cases of spontaneous combustion.

Re: Its really amazing and unbelievable!!!

I did not find that book yet even online but sooner or later I will.

EM is a vast subject which I have gone on and on about for years. I did not discover it and I am certainly not the only one doing it. Nor am I the best at it. Also, it is not a new subject. Newton, Gauss, Euler, Riemann and countless others did it. Mostly where you do not see it? In the classroom!

Two good quotes:

bobbym wrote:

How do you use Geogebra to help you on math questions?

Geogebra allows you to experiment. It allows you to spot patterns and relationships that you would never have seen without it. It combines the best aspects of math and programming into a simple interface.

When I started learning geometry we were warned by our teachers not to pay any attention to the diagram that came with the problem. Do not try to think that AC might equal AB based on my diagram, they would say. Well, back then when we wrote on animal hide scrolls and used quill pens the drawings were so bad that they were right. But supposing drawings of geometric figures were made to high accuracy, with scale all accurate, what then? Turns out, the human eye is very good in estimating distances and angles. We were doing that way before anyone ever heard of Euclid.

Because geogebra can measure and draw very accurately it allows the problem solver to use his eyes as well as his brain. Relationships pop out very quickly and a whole new method of solving problems is the result. I daresay that if every schoolkid in the world used geogebra they would not need forums like this one for help with their schoolwork because fully 90% of the problems brought in here can be done using geogebra in a couple of minutes.

In addition, it can assist in the learning of geometry as taught in schools, you know, the old fashioned way. Unbelievable to see people that are 70 or 80 years younger than I being so old fashioned. But if you must learn geometry the same way Euclid thought about it then geogebra can help there too. The whole concept is lumped into the new old concept called Experimental Math, EM for brevity.

What is EM and how is it different?

We believe that a CAS allows us to present mathematics to students as an
experimental subject. The term “experiment” that we use in this book is not used
casually or rhetorically. In a laboratory experiment, in clear contrast to lectures
or tutorials, the student, though perhaps guided by a lab assignment script, can
exert a measure of control over the process. Experiments, too, are often
collaborative, in the sense that students can pool their ideas and energies; such
interactions are less common in traditional mathematics learning. Finally, and
most importantly, an approach based in part upon experiment encourages the
student to formulate mathematical conjectures. This conjecturing process is
central to mathematics and to mathematical problem-solving, but has
traditionally played only a minor role in the mathematical activity of students.

Re: Its really amazing and unbelievable!!!

Hi;

When I was a very young man my Mother would take me all the way up Knickerbocker avenue. We would walk with her, my sister and I. It was more than a mile and I would also have to pull the shopping cart along behind me. There were many stores, little stores, not giant corporations. At the end of this avenue was a little bookstore. mammym would sometimes purchase a paperback there for me to read. It would cost 35 cents... now paperbacks are 100 dollars, 300 times as much! Who the heck can afford that? I can not. Since that time I have and never will purchase a book at those ridiculous prices. So, I scour the internet or sometimes a book fair of used or non sold books will appear close to me and then I get them for 1 dollar or so.

Do not worry about it, it is okay. It is enough that you have it. Post if you get stuck on one or find one interesting.
