I play a bit of piano, never took the lessons very serious though - hehe... It's an amazing feeling you get, when you get something right that's been teasing you for hours, or even days.

To the discussion about which instrument is harder to play; why even bother? I suppose you play what you play because you like it, and not because it's hard.

Yay for music.

I play:
a) Saxophone
b) Flute
c) Clarinet

and some
d) Ukulele
e) Guitar (bass guitar would be cool, but I don't have one of those... )
f) Piano

I won't put recorder there because everyone can play that. I sing, too.

I wish I had access to a ukelele.

I can get to a bass guitar quite quickly, since the place that sells them only about a kilometre away from me.

What kind of level are you at with guitar?

I have a flute, but I'm not very good at playing it...

Guitar? Um, no level. I just play chords and plonk along to whatever when I feel like it. I wish I could play better!

I find ukulele is much easier, because there are less strings, they're softer and my fingers don't have to reach so far. And the chords are much nicer to play.

The instruments under 'some' mean I don't have a strict level for them. What about you?

Yep, same for me (as in I give myself a level for my standard instruments.

Under the instruments that I do play, however, my levels are:

Acoustic (Guitar) - Advanced, but not a perfect player, so probably 3.0/4, or 3.2/4.
Classical (Guitar) - Intermediate/Advanced - 2.5/4. I need some practice with it since it is very different from the standard acoustic.
Electric (Guitar) - Advanced - 3.4/4. This is my favourite one.
Harmonica - Intermediate. Haven't been playing for long.
Keyboard - Intermediate - But somehow I don't think the piano/keyboard can be judged like that.
Cello - Intermediate - Again, I haven't been playing for long.

Well, the drum lessons around my area are too expensive, plus I don't actually own a drum kit.

Nah, just a level I give myself. Something I made up. Plus a few other people use it...

It just gives your overall level.

Also another thing to beware of: Always look at your picking finger every so often during electric guitar practice. I was playing a hard rhythm with bar chords above the 9th fret when my index finger from my picking handed had had some of its skin completely ripped off, and it was bleeding slightly. Lesson I learned: Playing the guitar for a few minutes can cause you to bleed. Ouch.

But that only happens if you pluck hard.

Piano - Have been playing for around 9 years now, and thus is my main and most loved instrument.
French Horn - Learnt for 2 years then gave it up. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but I'm really busy nowadays.

One more thing...have you heard of 'Fretboard Dabbing/Tapping' on the guitar? It is actually like the piano, but it only sounds good amplified, because trying to do that without an amplifier would only give you a very quiet sound. Finger Dabbing/Tapping above the 12th fret has an extremely good effect - It is almost the equivalent of playing notes on a piano

If I remember rightly, doesnt this produce something called "harmonics" or "Mnemonics"?
I just remembe a bass player in a band I used to know did this a lot and it made quite high pitched notes that accompanied and complimented the actual note played.

£1000 for an instrument is generally not 'way expensive', of couse this depends on the instrument. I agree though, I like the oboe very much aswell!

my music teacher demonstrated it by playig the simpsons tune. lol we could either rent it for like 12 pounds or buy my own one lol that is if we were to learn the oboe. im learning clarinet thouhg

dunno i havent started the lessons yet lol. in fact ive never blown a clarinet lol. im waiting for the letter saying i can start lessons then i have to send a check then after half term(the week after next week) i have to start it!(i mean 1 week after half term we start)

Yep, you jogged my memory - 'Fretboard Tapping' is part of Mnemonics.

Oh, and for luca-deltodesco - I might be learning drums soon, apparently there is some sort of 'special' offer.
