Speaking of illustrations, a good trick when making gifs to go with a certain background is to absolutely (100%) match the background (with some exceptions). Like the emoticons, notice how there is no white background.

Usually artists crop their 'small images' down as much as possible. Before they start (or sometimes after), they usually look at the colour of the background they will be using and use that as their image's background. For instance, your Sakura avatar, it would show up white against the MathsIsFun forum classic blue background (for those of you who use the default skin for accessing the forum). Sometimes, people can learn to identify the hexadecimal property of a colour (amazing, right?) and therefore be able to fill in their background straight away. Emoticons have corners, they have just been made like that so you'll think someone has 'cut around' or 'cut' a lasso around it.
