See if you can solve this

See if you can solve this:
                                                  cat
                                              + mug
                                              _______
                                                fooh
All you have do is figure out which number the letter stands for.

Re: See if you can solve this

This does not belong in the Suggestions and Comments forum...

I'll try to solve it, I have a book of these kinds of puzzles.

Re: See if you can solve this

I don't think that can be done, unless you allow multiple letters to take the same value. But then that would make it too easy.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi landof+;

I = 8, T = 1, A = 9, K = 2, E = 7, S = 4, L = 6, F = 0, O = 5, R = 3

81+ 19274 + 9 + 681167 = 700531

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi Bobby,

That's quite an oldie you dredged up!

I got the same answer as you, with 7 & LB. LB was much slower, of course.

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi;

I noticed it while I was looking for something else. I always enjoyed spelunking. These alphametics are goodies that never get stale.

How did you find it?

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi Bobby,

'Spelunking'...had to look that up. That makes you a spelunker.

So...a cave man! That conjures up some images of you and your age that hadn't crossed my mind before!

From The Free Dictionary:
cave-dweller n. One that dwells in a cave, especially a prehistoric human.

Does Sarah know?

Yes, I've always enjoyed alphametics, and they never get stale for me. I haven't done all that many, and only a handful of them by hand.

The initial setting up of 7 & LB to solve them was a nice challenge, but that has resulted in me becoming lazy as I now turn to the automated solution option before using my brain. That way I can protect my brain from injury and maybe it will even last as long as I do.

Without CAS the toughies would just be laying there gathering dust.

This one was quite easy to input into the templates of my two programs. Actually, I just changed an old puzzle to suit, pressed 'Go' and kazoom....done!

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi phrontister;

Spelunking, yes the first time someone called me a spelunker I admitted she was right.

I have a couple of templates too. I just put the problem in and wait.

Oh wait, I just realized that joke is not PC, I have changed it.

Re: See if you can solve this

With this one LB took 10x longer than 7. That's probably not too bad, given that I had to include the permutation function in the program as it's not inbuilt...unlike 7.

If I can include a constraint or two sometimes that reduces the performance difference, but I didn't try that here.

Worse, torn to shreds by irate females for my chauvinistic tendencies.

I use the meaning of one who explores caves.

I find my program a bit on the slow side, perhaps it has too many bells and whistles.

Re: See if you can solve this

You're lucky to have survived that brush with the gentler gender!!

Are you/have you been a true spelunker?

My 7 takes 85 seconds, and LB 900. That's on a 2.71GHz dual core. I tried using Parallelize for 7 but got the same time as running it without that option. When I had the quad core earlier this year, Parallelize gave quite a marked speed improvement.

The only bell my 7 program has is the tinkly EmitSound[Sound[SoundNote["BellTree"]]] conclusion announcer. No whistles.

Re: See if you can solve this

Hi phrontister;

It might be using the dual cores automatically.

Are you/have you been a true spelunker?

Actually, no.

You're lucky to have survived that brush with the gentler gender!!

Gentler? Hah! Many times have they ripped my still beating heart out of my chest and spat on it.
