Hi, MathsIsFun
My sister had a question i thought you might be able to answer. She is creating her own website with the help of Yahoo Site Builder, but she has not launched the site or even selected a webhost yet. I believe yahoo offers some webhosting services that she will probably usel, but she wants her website to be accesible through google. What she wants to know is, do you have to pay/subscribe to google and register your site with them before you can find your site in a google search? Or does google automatically find anything on the web?
Thanks!

Google will find it, if it is linked to.
So she simply needs to get some links, possibly from friend's sites, or forums, etc., and "Googlebot" will go "hey, something new to add to the data store".

okay, but what do you mean by 'get some links'?

This is a link: Math Is Fun
It points at a page, and the words used help Google understand what you think the page is about.

thanks, mathsisfun! I believe that clears up my question.

Yes, and the more links, the better it will be for the Google Spiders (or 'crawlbots'). There are different types, though, it isn't only Google that crawls webpages. Yahoo and MSN search-engines do, too, and even Ask.com.

The interesting thing about Google is that it bases its searches mostly on text in links (such as MathsIsFun's example), rather than content of a page. A quirky side-effect of this is that pages can get returned even if the search term doesn't actually appear in the page itself.
For example, if I said something like Best site ever enough times, then Google would put this site as a result for Best site ever, even though it never claims it is. Well, apart from that I've just said it here. But if I had put that somewhere else on the internet then it would achieve the same effect.
A fairly famous example of someone exploiting this can be seen if you search Google for 'liar'.
Edit: Oh, no it can't. They must have fixed it. Well, beforehand, the top result used to be Tony Blair's homepage.
Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

Go to Google, type in "french military victories" and press "I'm Feeling Lucky"

Don't you get it?
Look what it says beside 'did you mean ... ?'. Also, the address of the site ... I won't spoil it for you, have a look!

I wonder what would happen if Laterally Speaking showed that at school?

More questions, mathsisfun!
As for good web hosts, will more expensive or reputable web hosts for your website bring more traffic to your website? In otherwords, how much does the host you choose effect the popularity of your website, and are there any particular hosts that you'd care to reccomend?

Well, are you referring to free web hosts or paid for web hosts? The 'best' web hosts are usually the paid for ones.

No, better web hosts don't bring more traffic.
The better ones give higher speed to your site, more "up-time" and better service.
I can't recommend any, because the one I used to use was bad, and the present one is good but is very expensive (overkill for your needs).
But you should get an acceptable host for less than $10/month. Google "web host review" and you will be astounded at how competitive it is.

I used ukhost4u.com.

I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.

I recommend http://www.streamline.net/, the Home user package. That's what I'm using atm, the customer service isn't great but the server has never failed on me so far.
