No, no, he's right. His smiley was Darth Maul. You're thinking of Darth Sidious, who trained Darth Maul. Maul kills Qui-Gon Jinn, and the city was actually Theed, on Naboo, not Mos Eisley where Anakin Skywalker was born. And my Gods, I am a nerd....

Maul's dead in Episode II. Obi-Wan kills him after Qui'Gon is killed by Maul in Episode I.
In turn, Maul was an apprentice of Darth Sideous, who was the Sith Lord at the time. The only other known sith was Darth Tyrannus, who was killed in Episode III by Anakin.

Han shot first.
