We're too bloody good at this game. I know I should have gone with a 6-digit binary number wink

Guess 3: 154 2B

Trillian: Five to one against and falling. Four to one against and falling… Three to one, two, one. Probability factor of one to one. We have normality. I repeat, we have normality. Anything you still can’t cope with is therefore your own problem.

Re: Cow Bull 1

Interestingly, Cow bull of 3 digits is the easiest! Cow bull of 2 digits or 4 digits make things more complicated and end up with more guesses! This is true of cow bull of 5 digits or more too! 3 is closest to e, now you know why, being a mathematician!

Once these guesses have been answered, I believe we'll be able to get it at 7 (if we didn't at 4)

Re: Cow Bull 1

Guess 2: 314

PS: Let’s recap the rules: no repetition, and no starting with 0, right?

Then 162 = 1c ⇒ there are 216 possibilities:

230 234 235 237 238 239 240 243 245 247 248 249 250 253 254 257 258 259 270 273 274 275 278 279 280 283 284 285 287 289 290 293 294 295 297 298 301 306 310 314 315 317 318 319 320 324 325 327 328 329 341 346 351 356 371 376 381 386 391 396 401 406 410 413 415 417 418 419 420 423 425 427 428 429 431 436 451 456 471 476 481 486 491 496 501 506 510 513 514 517 518 519 520 523 524 527 528 529 531 536 541 546 571 576 581 586 591 596 630 634 635 637 638 639 640 643 645 647 648 649 650 653 654 657 658 659 670 673 674 675 678 679 680 683 684 685 687 689 690 693 694 695 697 698 701 706 710 713 714 715 718 719 720 723 724 725 728 729 731 736 741 746 751 756 781 786 791 796 801 806 810 813 814 815 817 819 820 823 824 825 827 829 831 836 841 846 851 856 871 876 891 896 901 906 910 913 914 915 917 918 920 923 924 925 927 928 931 936 941 946 951 956 971 976 981 986

Re: Cow Bull 1

You look like you're right, but I can't reproduce your answer. Here's my thinking:

First consider the case when the "cow number" gets positioned in the hundreds place. Then it must have come from the 10 or 1 place and so there are 2 choices for that. Now there are 7 choices of digit for the ten place, and then 6 choices for the 1 place, making 2x7x6 = 84 combinations in all.

Now consider the case when the "cow number" goes somewhere other than the hundreds place. There are two choices of place for it to go, and two choices of number for it to be.
Now the hundreds place has 6 choices of digit (not 0, 1, 2 or 6) and whatever place isn't cowed also has 6 choices (not 1, 2, 6 or whatever the hundreds digit is). That makes 2x2x6x6 = 144 combinations.

Adding the results from the two cases together, we get 228 possible numbers in total.

Have I gone wrong somewhere?
