Ever since I found this site I been lurking around, mainly in the help sections where some wonderful members help me with problems in my class and then when my math knowledge permits, I offer a little help to other users.
I found this site to be very interesting in the sense that the regular members seem to have a lot of mathematical knowledge and I find that amusing.
I understand theres an "Introduction" sub-forum for new comers etc but I thought it would be cool to have one topic where everyone pretty says where they live at (if they want) and what exactly they do in their life and how they attained their mathematical knowledge and if they use it in their everyday life (or work) etc?
Im going to start by saying that I live in Miami and I go to FIU (Florida International University) and im currently doing a major in Mathematics. I dont really know what I could do with a degree in math, I just decided to major in it because its my passion.

I am From Portland (Oregon, not Maine), but am currently living in the Eastern Pyrenees. I am currently working on several projects, one of which I am having a bit of trouble with. I kinda like to mix mathematics and programming, as the two are quite useful when merged.
I am also quite interested in energy sources and vectors other than hydrocarbons. This may be in no small part due to the fact that there are 2 large solar research centers within 15 minutes' drive, and that said centers are the reason of us coming here.
I also am quite exasperated at the lack of attention given by people to language, and, more specifically, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

I do databases. And also try to keep this forum and the MathsIsFun website running (which is a little stressful at the moment, what with server problems).

I live in the UK, and am currently in sixth form (if that means nothing to non-Brits - I'm 16) doing my AS/A levels.
I take Further Maths, Physics, Economics and English - quite a range .
I love maths and am planning to do it at uni .

You take Further Maths without ordinary Maths?
I did A-level Further Maths too, but I had to take it with Maths (or Maths Syllabus C as it was called). I wasnt allowed to take F. Maths on its own. My other two subjects were Physics and Economics. I loved Physics but hated Economics.

Well, I guess I'm next. I'm from New Orleans and am attending the University of New Orleans for Mathematics, of course. I'd say I have a pretty ambitious goal of one day becoming a professor. I didn't like math, but was still good at it, in high school. I don't know. Maybe it was teenage rebellious thing. But now I love it, and I know that whatever career I choose, mathematics is going to play a big part. And yes, mathematics play a large role in my daily life since my job requires me to sit here on the computer and do nothing. So, I teach myself things I missed in high school, or new maths to prepare me for the college courses. I desperately want to move out of this city, by the way. I absolutely hate it. I love winter, so I'm thinking somewhere in the northeast.
Don't quote me on that.

Ok, if we're being picky, I do Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics and English.
I really enjoy all of my subjects.
Did you go to university Jane?

What?! Five A-level subjects! And I wasnt allowed to take more than four A-level subjects.
FYI, I took my A levels in 1987. (Im 38 now. ) A lot of things may have changed in twenty years, I dont know.
Anyway, I went to Queen Mary, University of London. I took several years break after my A levels so I didnt start my uni course until 1991. At that time, the university college was called Queen Mary & Westfield College. It had been called Queen Mary College but had changed its name upon merging with another college of the University of London. Since then its changed its name again; its now simply called Queen Mary.

Haha it's quite a lot I know, but I've looked at some old A level textbooks and there is no question that A levels are easier now than they were when you took them. I like being well-rounded, but the only drawback is that I don't have the time to do as much maths as I would like. I plan to teach myself next year's work over the summer so I can learn whatever maths I want next year - we go too slowly in class.
One of my maths teachers went to Queen Mary . Im presuming you also did maths?

Yep. Queen Mary & Westfield was the only college at University of London (in fact one of very few universities in the whole of the UK) to offer Pure Mathematics as a BSc degree course not Mathematics, but Pure Mathematics. I wasnt interested in the whole gamut of maths; I was principally interested in pure maths. Im sure Pure Mathematics degree courses are now more widely available in UK universities but that was the situation back then.

In my university they offer 3 degrees having to do with math. They are Mathematical Sciences, Applied Mathematics and then just "Mathematics" which is what Im doing. The fact that they have Applied and Sciences as another major, does that mean that "Mathematics" refers to Pure Mathematics?
The stuff here in the US is different so I dont understand all your talk about A-levels etc but when I was back in High School I took AP Economics Macro & Micro and I loved that class. I wish I could do a double major in it but it would be too stressful for me. I guess its the opposite for me and you. Im currently taking Physics and I hate it, maybe its the way the professor teaches but he just makes the class seem like the whole point is memorizing equations. He is always like "For this kind of question, use this equation, for this other one, use this other equation" etc. I just see it as a grind of memorizing equations. In the other part, I loved my economics because one was able to analyze situations, I loved when the professor would give an assignment describing a hypothetical economic situation and one had to analyze it, explain whats happening etc. I just truly loved that.
As iheartmath said, I'd like to teach myself some things I never learned in High School and since im in University right now, I just feel like a big gap in my mathematical knowledge. For example, in High School I never learned ANYTHING having to do with matrices which is why I just ordered a small book to teach myself etc. Does anyone know of a site that includes sort of a checklist of what one is supposed to know in High School math so I could see what I need to teach myself? Would be really helpful.
Thanks everyone for exposing yourselves here, its entertaining to see where the passion for math comes from everyone here.

OK... I guess I'm next.
I'm from England, but I moved to Australia last January. I'm currently in Year 7, still not doing any special exams or anything, but my class once did Maths all day. That was bad.
There wasn't even any breaks apart from lunch. We missed recess.

Stick around ... you will hopefully get better at math ... it is certainly challenging, but that is one reason we like it.

I live in Australia, and am currently in year 11
I am doing quite a large amount of maths involved subjects. I am doing Physics, Maths Methods, Maths specialist, I.T, and multimedia.
I want to study electronic engineering at uni which requires maths skills, I do enjoy maths and am looking forward to calculus integration in particular as it looks interesting.
