Well, without actually reading Macbeth fully, I technically cannot get your joke. (Sorry, our lot did not get it, though! )
But assuming that Macbeth has said in the play that Thanes (of Cawdor and Glamis) is full of gas, or something similar, I guess I can guess that that joke was funny!
P.S. I never actually got why I don't like the phrase "you lot" a lot.
