Switzerland 2-0 Portugal (Basel)
Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic (Geneva)

The Swiss victory was a bit of a surprise but that match was a dead rubber anyway, with Portugal already through and Switzerland already out. All the drama was in the other match …

… where Turkey came from two goals down to win 3-2! Indeed the Turks were 1-2 down with less than 4 four minutes of normal time remaining – up came Nihat Kahveci with two goals in two minutes to send Turkey through to the last eight.

As if there wasn’t enough drama, the Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel was sent off in stoppage time for punching a Czech player. He will miss Turkey’s quarterfinal match against Croatia at Vienna.

You forgot to mention that, because they had already used all three of their substitutions, Turkey had to put Tuncay (who plays as a winger) in goal for the last minute. I was praying that the Czech Republic scored - I wanted to see penalties against him.

Thrilling match, but Turkey deserved to win.

Tonight’s matches were relatively quiet after last night’s fireworks. So, Portugal will play Germany in the first quarterfinal on Thursday.

Spain came from behind to win the match that didn’t matter one way or the other. David Villa didn’t score in the match but he’s still the tournament’s top scorer with 4 goals. And so Saturday’s quarterfinal will be between Netherlands and Russia.

Croatia 1-1 Turkey after extra time (Vienna)

Turkey won 3-1 on penalties. And Turkey are providing all the dramatic excitement in the tournament at the moment, it seems. First, that dramatic last-minute winner against Switzerland, then the even more dramatic late goals against the Czech Republic, and now, after Croatia had all but booked a semifinal spot with a goal two minutes from the end of extra time, an equalizer in literally the last kick of extra time to take the tie into penalties! And the Turkish second-choice goalkeeper, Rüştü Reçber (in for the suspended Volkan Demirel), even saved Croatia’s fourth spot kick to become a mini-hero for the night!

Half time: No goals at the break. The Dutch dominated and created lots of chances, and the Russians had quite a few themselves as well.

If Russia are in the final, that'd be extremely boring. Honestly, they bring nothing new to the game - no originality or uniqueness about them. However, their defence is good and their tactics are well-initiated - much like Greece in Euro 2004, or Belgium in Euro 2000, if anyone remembers.

Holland deserve to be in the final, they've played on form for the whole of the tournament so far. With Germany vs Turkey and possibly Russia vs Spain in the semi-final, we're looking at an incredibly hectic semi here - much unlike the recent Euro tournaments we have seen. However, some do believe that 2008 is the year of the underdogs - could this be a new beginning for Turkey and Russia?

I think Turkey deserve to win, however. With their reduced number of players and their masses of bookings, they've put up with a lot to come this far. Turkey for the win.

Initially I supported France and I have done for over a decade now, but, as you can see, their skill has decreased dramatically what with the retire of French legends such as Zidane, Trezuguet, Petit, Thuram and Makelele (they are now officially retired), Barthez, and others. This gradually happens to all teams ... it's going to happen to all of the modern titans like Brazil, Mexico, France, Italy, Holland, Germany, etc. just like it happened to Uruguay.

Who's everyone supporting for this tournament?

I also really hope this Holland vs Russia match doesn't go to penalties - Russia are deadly penalty-takers, as they have shown in their qualifying matches. What I'm also amazed at is how hard Van der Sar has had to work, while the Russian goalkeeper has had to do hardly anything. A new era of modern Euro, I see ...

England aren't in the Euro (luckily!).

This seems a lot like a repeat of yesterday's match ... could two underdog teams win twice in a row through a penalty shootout? This is tense ...

Russia are, by far, playing better than Holland at this moment in time, unfortunately. Holland do have a habit of losing in the final matches ... though it is still too early to say this at this stage of the tournament.

112′: OMG, it’s gone in! Russia have scored in extra time! Netherlands 1-2 Russia. Unless the Dutch can do a Turkey, they are heading out!

Both teams look tired in extra time. The Russians look marginally less tired than the Dutch because it is they who are having more of the ball in extra time. The Dutch are playing less and less passing and more and more long balls, which is sad to see.

Guess this is an underdog tournament ... three underdog teams winning in a row? O_o

I'm supporting Turkey here. Though it's likely to be Germany vs Spain or Germany vs Italy in the final. But you never know ... Turkey and Russia are playing amazingly lately.

AET: Aye, the Dutch dream is over. Netherlands 1-3 Russia.

The Russian scorers in extra time were Dmitri Torbinsky and Andrei Arshavin. And the race for the golden boot is hotting up ever so slightly because Pavlyuchenko is now level with Lukas Podolski of Germany on 3 goals in the tournament; both are just one goal behind David Villa of Spain with 4 goals. (Hakan Yakın has also scored 3 goals but of course he won’t be adding to his tally because Switzerland are out.)

Well, since Turkey have never won anything before, it would be poetic justice to see them win – just as it was with Greece four years ago – but they’re going to have a mountain to climb against Germany, and won’t be helped by injuries and suspensions to their key players. Their best hope, perhaps, is to defend with eleven men in their penalty box for 120 mins and take the Germans into a penalty shootout.

I did my own little 'Euro 2008' replicating the group standings and everything.

And you know what?

The same exact teams went through. The method I used was doing headers with my eyes closed.

And the exact same thing happened! Russia beat Holland 3-1, just like what happened in the real thing. I predict that Italy will win - 2-1 to Italy tonight.

Then I tried the semi-final - Germany beat Turkey 2-1, and Italy beat Russia 4-3! Then, in the final, it was Germany vs Italy. Seems like a good prediction, though random. Perhaps it may come true ...
