Mathopolis

I have been working on new features for the "Mathopolis" website and have a draft application running: it is the "Reaction Math" game which you may be familiar with.

Register (it is easy), and have a go: http://www.mathopolis.com/reaction-math-addsingle.php

Let me know what you do and do not like about it!

(If I can get this one running well I can add lots more, with history, user pages and more)

LuisRodg: So you did! 85.45

But I am second!

careless25: thanks for the feedback.

If anyone has suggestions for a game they would like to have on mathopolis, just let me know.

Re: Mathopolis

I have the number pad memorized from regular computer use and I let my index finger govern numbers 1-4-7, my middle finger 2-5-8 and then the other finger 3-6-9.

This is a very nice game but I get really frustrared when I try to do it really fast (i want to break 90.0) and I mess up by touching another key...I get really mad lol. I turn off the screen and storm out the room hehe smile

Re: Mathopolis

I have expanded the number of "Reaction Math" games, and added an "Estimation Game" (you have to count/estimate how many objects).

Here is the current Game List.

See if you can get some good scores, and let me know what you think of each game.

Also let me know if you find any way of cheating smile

Re: Mathopolis

So you have! What was your technique?

The idea is to increase people's skill at quick counting/estimating - do you feel it will accomplish this?

(I think it would be a cool skill: "How many people are at the party?" "27. Of course.")

Re: Mathopolis

Some site updates to Mathopolis.

I added a "user" page. For example: http://www.mathopolis.com/user.php?u=MathsIsFun

Re: Mathopolis

90.22 in the add single. That should be hard to break I guess. Took me like 10 tries.

Re: Mathopolis

That is pretty quick. You probably won't be beaten (for a while at least).

I have not told anyone else about Mathopolis (except here) until I am happy the software is performing OK ... what is your opinion Luis ?

And then I have to figure out the best way to start "spreading the word" so we can get some tough competition smile

I have also thought to limit the top scores to the last 30 days so newcomers get a chance to do well (but once you get a "1st" record it is permanent).

Thanks jl!

I have been recoding a lot and that one slipped through.

Try again now, please.

Re: Mathopolis

I have added nearly 20 new "Estimation" games, from "Percent Full" to "Estimate Square Roots"

Please try them (and maybe get 1st place honors!) here: Mathopolis Game List

Let me know what you think of each one, if the scoring is too easy or hard, and any suggestions etc.

Re: Mathopolis

As a matter of fact, Mathopolis is great fun!
I first tried converting fractions to decimals, and was successful.
I shall try the others too.
They are all very interesting, well designed and the brain behind this deserves a lot of praise.
Suggestion #1 : Can mathopolis have a separate URL? That would save the trouble of logging on to this website and moving there.
Suggestion #2: Can mathopolis be promoted as a separate portal meant for education and entertainment of kids/teens (although thats exactly what is being done in MathsIsFun!)

Re: Mathopolis

Thanks ganesh smile

Yes, Mathopolis is its own website, specifically for games/activities that are best done when logged in.

Re: Mathopolis

In the estimation games, it seems you get penalised WAY more for getting something wrong when the answer is small. Whereas if the answer is higher the allowable error increases. I think that this is a bit unfair, because sometimes finding the smaller answers can be just as hard as the higher answers. Maybe you could lessen the penalty?
e.g. In the estimate up to 99 shapes game, if the screen is really cluttered then you know it's in the region of 80-99, and even if you're really off, you still get points, but if there's only about 30 items on the screen and you are very close, you will still only get a few points.

Also I think the scores should have some kind of scaling in relation to the game's difficulty. For example, in Subtract Double, the scores will rarely get over 20, but in Add Single the scores can be very close to 100. I don't know how this would be implemented, but it might be a good idea

Re: Mathopolis

Thanks Identity! You have done well I see smile

Scoring: Currently being within 8 of 80 is as good as being within 1 of 10.

Plus I have a "within 1,2, or 3" score that takes over for small numbers (so that you get points for guessing 3 instead of 4).

Can you suggest a better method (please)?

Re: Mathopolis

Perhaps just lessen the change in allowable error, it's just that it's quite noticeable for me at the moment.

e.g. within 4 of 80 is the same as within 1 of 10

For games with small numbers, I think the "within 1,2, or 3" system is fine.

As for the scoring, you could keep it as it is, but maybe you could also have a scoring system where it ranks firstly based on # correct and then avg. reaction time.

That could be arranged.

Is it only with the visual count that it is noticeable? The add/subtract/etc seems fine?
