Mine's most likely not the best, but I use it in some of my tests. Since the questions are almost always in order (in the tests), I take a look at each question then read each passage that is relevant to that question. And so I read bit by bit.

thanks... I will try that.. Ideally, how many minutes should you spend for a 5 point reading comprehension test that has a very long passage (entire A4 size paper is filled, with font size)?

I just want to ask for some tips on how you should answer reading comprehension tests. do you first read the questions, then the passage? or passage first then the questions? I really need your help.. Im having a hard time answering these questions.. Thanks...

Now, when you say '$1' can this be in coins or just paper money?

let's say, all are 1$ bills...

#33 Re: Help Me ! » tricky problem.. » 2006-11-21 02:34:00

Assume the value is expressed in $..

let's say, it's like this... you, A, B, and D are confined in a room and then, the only money in that room is only 100.

A=50
B=50
a total of 100

you borrowed 50 from A and 50 from B.. therefore, all the money in that room is all in your hands..

say, you decided that you only need 97... thus, you have 3 left which you must return to A and B.
Instead of returning the entire 3, you only gave 1 to A, and 1 to B. So, there is only 1 left in your hands..

A=50-1=49
A=50-1=49

So you owe now A and B 98, and you only have $1 in your hands. where is the other 1$ which will complete the $100?

I don't think there is a need to use a calculator since this is just a matter of simple addition and subtraction..

this problem seems to be a little tricky for me.. I don't know if you  know this problem.. I will just share it..

You borrowed $50 from A and $50 from B..
When you entered a store, you saw and bought a pants.
The cahsier gave you $3.
you gave the $1 to A and $1 to be..
How much do you need to pay now to A and B if you already paid them $1 each?

can u please help me with this? Here's the problem:

car plates here in the philippines consists of 3 letters and 3 numbers... letters are from A-Z and numbers are from 0-9.. (For example, ABC-123)..   The question is how many permutations, arrangement, or combinations can we get? the Letters referred  may start in any letter but on part of the digits, it must start only from 1 to 9 and not 0. each letter and number must appear in each permutation only once. Take note that in each permutation, letters and numbers must be combined. Therefore, e.g. ABC-123, ABC-124, ABC-125 are considered distinct from one another..  Actually, this is our assignment. I already made it but i'm not sure with my answer. That's why i'm asking you experts..

It is already 11:51 in the evening here guys.. and i only have until 11:30 in the morning to check my e-mail and read the answer. Please help me with these... Thanks a lot..

oh yeah ur right.. but, do i still need to calculate for the remaining time to exactly fill half of the glass? If so, how?

#40 Re: Help Me ! » solving exponents manually » 2006-07-23 01:51:09

or let  us assume that i am not using a scientific calculator? how will i calculate the exponents?

I have a question.. Do you know what

means? If you do, I can't see how you can have problems calculating it manually.

But he is talking about 2^59, which is much more hard to compute.
Here is it:
2^59=576460752303423488
2^-59=1/(2^59)≈ 1.734723475976807094411924481391906738281e-18

yeah ur right... i can only calculate exponents manually if small values are involved.. Sorry, but i still can't understand how you came up with that answer... any other methods?

#42 Re: Help Me ! » formula or solution to solve this problem. » 2006-07-23 01:44:26

ive figured out a solution with these problem... but i don't know if this is right..

lets change the given to a smaller values.. lets say that every second, the faucet puts out a drop of water. (same situation).. It takes 8 seconds to fill the glass. the time within which the faucet will fill half of the glass is,

A is the total no. of drops to fill the glass
A=2^8-1=255          2 there is the doubling; 8 is the time for the glass to be filled; and 1 is the
                              first second or the number which no doubling is made...

As we can see, the total no. of drops is, since there is 1 drop in the first second, multiply it by 2 and add 1 (as i have observed in the sequence)... therefore, 1 on the first second, 1x2+1=3 on 2nd, 3x2+1=7 3rd, 7x2+1=15 4th, and so on up to 127x2+1=255 8th second.

255/2 = 127.5 - the quantity of half of the glass

                              ooops... i forgot the method on how to determine on what second this 127.5
                              fall. but logically, take note that we have  multiplied and added 1 until we
                              have reached 255 (and that is in the 8th second). therefore, reversing the
                              process, (255 - 1)/2=127. Realizing that we have reversed and moved back
                              1 time, we subtract 1 from 8.. and that is 7...

from this long explanation, i came up to this answer ---> 7... I just don't now if Im right... Lolz...

#44 Re: Help Me ! » solving exponents manually » 2006-07-23 00:31:44

for example, 2^59 or 2^-59... without using any calculator.. in smaller numbers for example, 2^3=8...

this is the problem. just imagine, a faucet puts out a single drop of water every minute into a glass of water. the quantity of water which the faucet drops, doubles every minute.. take note that in the first minute, there is only a single drop of water. The faucet can fill the entire glass in one hour. The question is, how long will it take for the faucet to fill half of the glass? Thanks in advance..
