The forums are not instant messaging, so replies might not appear until a few hours up to a few days (sometimes a few weeks!).

Don't look at me, I don't play chess.

As J.E.F. said, the ranks shows a fuzzy estimate on how active you are, or how helpful you are, or how long you've been in this forum.

Guesstimate on how many posts each rank has.

Real Members are not related to post number. They are granted by the Admin (the creator of this site(I think) which is MathisFun) if you ask for it and you're worthy.

Moderators usually patrol the forums and check if everyone's being forum-friendly (I've seen quite a few members here that weren't). They have the power (I think, Johnny is never sure) to ban a member for a while or longer.

These are just my observations here. Ask The Mods or the Admin for a better explanation.

The number of sections seem to be

for all n? , I'm not sure.

#82 Re: Help Me ! » Volume and surface area for rectangular based pyramids » 2008-06-03 21:33:29

The general formula for the volume of a pyramid is:

where b is base and h is height.
In the case of rectangular pyramids, the base is equal to the length multiplied by width.

The surface area for the rectangular pyramid is:

where l is length, w is width, and s is the, umm, height of the triangle?

What about the problem before this last one?
Could someone set up the equation for these next two problems?
1. Farmer Jones has horses and roosters. All together here are 88feet and 40 wings. How many horses and how many roosters
    does he have?
2. Two people are traveling towards each other. They are 100 miles apart, one is traveling 30 per hour and the other is traveling 20 per hour. How long will it take for them to meet?

1 can be answered using linear equations in two variables:

Let x=the number of horses
     y=the number of roosters

4x + 2y = 88  (since horses have four feet, roosters have two)
        2y = 40 (roosters have 2 wings each, and I doubt Pegasus is one of the horses:D)

By simplifying the second equation, we can see that there are 20 roosters. all we need to know now is the number of horses, x.
By subtracting the 2nd equation from the first, we will get

  4x + 2y = 88
-         2y = 40
          4x = 48
            x = 12

so, you have 20 roosters, and 12 cows.

2 also can be solved using linear equations in two variables, I think. However, I forgot how. Sorry!

A quadratic equation is an equation in the form of

Where A, B, and C are numeric coefficients and

A≠0

Apart from that, i know nothing of quadratic equations. Sorry!

They're great! I especially liked the last one.

Regarding the pieces, isn't it because the first shape isn't really a triangle, since the hypotenuse isn't a straight line?

When rearranged, the "missing" square was transferred because the hypotenuse bulged out.

At least, that's how I would explain it.
