I think there's a mistake in there. You can convert the left summation into the right one, but the added constants are different.
And now replacing r with n doesn't matter since it's a dummy variable.
So if I'm right, the equation in your post should have a 4 on the RHS where the 1 is.
Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.
