I find it easiest to use the right multiplier for questions like these.
eg. If P is invested for 1 year at 4% then
So the multiplier for 4% is 1.04
Simple: the principal is multiplied by 0.04 and then by 2 (for 2 years)
and then P added on
Compound: For each year you times by 1.04 so
