Sets and Venn Diagrams

In what way can we use venn diagrams to represent sets?

Bob,

Do you have a computer program to show sets as venn diagrams?

If so, can you show a picture for the following using different colors for each venn diagram?

1. A is a subset of B

2. A and B are disjoint sets = empty set

3. A Intersected B

4. A union B

5. A bar = complement of set A

If you don't have a computer program to show venn diagrams, can you share one or two links that easily explains and shows how this is done?

Thank you

Re: Sets and Venn Diagrams

I think this could be done using geogebra but I have a program called Sketchpad which has 'nice' options for displaying a diagram. I've tried to fit all five into one diagram. Hope it's clear.

Absolutely perfect. This is what I was searching for. Thank you. I also wanted to know if Discreet Math is the course that covers the concept of sets.

Re: Sets and Venn Diagrams

In a word, Yes.  I googled it just to check and found that different courses offer slightly varied topics but they all have set theory at their core.  This is because set theory is needed for cardinality and that underscores most of maths.

You might like to look up Russell's paradox.  When he stumbled on this it caused some consternation amongst mathematicians because it looked for a while like the very foundations of mathematics was based on shaky ground.  Happily they found a way to deal with it. smile

Thanks for the information. Can you recommend a decent Discreet Math textbook for me to download freely online? How about the name of a decent student-friendly Set Theory textbook?

Re: Sets and Venn Diagrams

Sorry, I cannot. Maybe someone else will make a suggestion.
