Slope of a line

Completely lost on this one. I am supposed to find the slope....

Driving down a mountain, Tom finds that he has descended 1800 ft
in elevation by the time he is 3.25 mi horizontally away from the top of the
mountain. Find the slope of his descent to the nearest hundredth.

Re: Slope of a line

the best thing to do is draw a diagram and put everything in the same units ...
|\
| \
|   \
|     \
|       \
|1       \
|8         \
|0           \
|0             \
|                \
|<-17160ft->\ TOM

then slope is found by dividing the 'rise' (vertical movement - 1800ft) by the 'run' (horizontal movement - 17160ft)

so you get slope = 1800 / 17160
= 0.104895.....
= 0.10 (to the nearest hundredth)

could someone please check all that tho?

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Re: Slope of a line

Hi Ant,

How did you get 17160 feet?

Re: Slope of a line

3.25 miles is 3.25*1760 = 5720 yards.

5720 yards is 5720*3 = 17160 feet.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.
