Two blocks connected by a string are held at rest along an incline plane by a second
string tied to a wall (see the diagram). The mass of the lower block is 1.0 kg; the mass of
the upper block is 2.0 kg. The incline makes an angle of 37° to the horizontal. Calculate
(A) the tension in the string connecting the two blocks.
(B) the tension in the string between the 2.0-kg block and the wall.

(A) Resolving forces on the lower (1kg) block parallel to the slope, you should find that the tension in the string connecting the two blocks is equal to the component of the 1kg blocks weight along the slope, which is 1.0×gsin(37°).
(B) Resolving forces on the upper (2kg) block parallel to the slope. This block is held up by the tension in the string connecting it to the wall, which is balanced by the sum of the tension in the other string, which is 1.0×gsin(37°) from part (A), and the component of the 2kg blocks weight along the slope, which is 2.0×gsin(37°). Hence the tension in this string is 3.0×gsin(37°).
