I was informed if you measure something that is for example 45 7/16 inch you should reduce the 7/16 by the lowest common denominator but what would that denominator be for 7/16. I can't divide a even number into both numbers?

Hi;
You can't reduce 7/16 it is already in lowest terms.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

But, for example, 6/16 could be reduced to 3/8

I understand because 2 can go into 6 and 16 but there is nothing that can go into both 7 and 16. Alright thank you. Excellent forum.
