Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Please repost the earlier problem and I will show you how.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Okay thank you

Here you go: (a + b - c)(a + b + c)

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

If I say that x = a + b, then wherever I see an a + b, I can put an x. This is called substitution. So try that now and post your answer.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Alright, so we turn it into (x - c)(x + c), right?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yes that is correct. Good. You can now use foil on that problem. That is beauty of algebra, how subtle manipulations can turn a tough problem into one we already know how to do. The mathematicians dream! Please do it and post your answer.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Oh, okay...

(x - c)(x + c)

*F* x²

*O* xc

*I* -cx

*L* -c²

How does that look so far?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Very good, except remember the convention with outer.

Yes, an agreed way of doing things. Sort of like first name then last name.

Sorry... had chores

And yes, I know what convention means, I was just wondering if you would point out what I did wrong.

*O* xc

What do you think? Does that look good to you?

Do you remember convention? Hi Schwarzennegger Arnold. Would he like that?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Alright then, we'd have

x² + cx - cx - c²

Do I simplify or should I switch it back to "a + b" now?

I think it'd be easier to switch it back at the end. What about you?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

I will switch it at the end.

x² + cx - cx - c²

= x² - cx² - c²

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

That is a good idea, and I would like to say that is darn close.

How did you come up with -cx^2 when you subtracted cx from cx?

Oops, i multiplied by mistake.

It should say:  x² -  c² right?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yes, I switch now, right?

Do I just turn all the x's into a + b's?

So is it a^2 + b^2 - c^?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

That is an honest error but not correct. Wherever you see an x you put an a + b. Since x^2 is really x * x you substitute like this

x * x = ( a + b ) ( a + b )
