Re: Algebra word problems

bobbym,
the fish problem answer won't "take." I have one more try with it, before it switches numbers.

The other problem I typed in probably switched when I clicked the page.
It now has:
Factor the polynormal (sp) and uses b's. Let's get the fish straightened out first  and I will go back and get the other one.
Thank you.

Re: Algebra word problems

Did you try the 17.14 answer?

Re: Algebra word problems

Yes, I tried them both. It wants it to the tenth and I tried 17.1, then 17.14.  I thought my time was up, but one more try.

Re: Algebra word problems

Hi;

That is what I am getting for an answer. Let it switch numbers and we will try again.

Re: Algebra word problems

I typed in the entire answer you gave first and it said wrong that it was 17.1, which I had typed it in first of all.
Okay, so it switched numbers:
The weight of a fish varies jointly as its girth and the square of its length. One fish weighed in at 20.5 lb. and measured 33 in. long with 21 in. girth. How much would a fish 30 in. long with 23 in girth weigh?
The fish would weigh approximately ___lb.
(Round the value of k to six decimal places. Round the weight to the nearest tenth if necessary.)
It is confusing.

Re: Algebra word problems

So then I was right with 17.1 That is good because I will use the same method again.

I am getting 18.555686 lbs which is 18.6 lbs rounded to the nearest tenth.

Re: Algebra word problems

It won't take it and we both know it's right. I tried 18.6 and the 6 decimal place one too.

Here's the message that popped up when it said it wasn't right.

"Begin with the equation relating the first fish's weight to its length and girth, 20.5 = K21 (33)2^. Solve for K. Round K to 6 decimal places. Then calculate the width, w, of the second fish: w= K 23(30)2^."

Re: Algebra word problems

Hi survival;

I see what the problem is now. Try 18.5 lbs

Re: Algebra word problems

18.5 is correct. Can you post how this problem was calculated?
Thanks, that fish was a tough one.

Hi;

When you posted the first question you left out the k after the word round. So I assumed they wanted the weight rounded. Later on you put the k in and I did not see that.

Round k to 6 places. k = .000896

Round w to 18.5

I will remember how to work this one. Your calculations were accurate as they always are. Thank you! It is back to school for me tomorrow.

I will. Maybe this Monday is better than the last one. Hope so.
Thanks, for helping me understand math better, and I exit for tonight. Have a great Monday!

Re: Algebra word problems

Hello, I just got home. The day was long and the weather was hot. It is dark and I worked a lot of math and other classes today with more to go.
I feel like my head will explode before the break gets here.

Hope your day went well. I have algebra tonight. I hope you can help me; my brain is fried.
Factor completely.
a 2^ - 2a + 1 - 16f^2. ( that last part is sixteen f to the power of 2.)

Thank you.

Re: Algebra word problems

Hi;

Sorry about the day. Your head will not explode.

a 2^ - 2a + 1 - 16f^2

You are putting the exponentiation operator on the wrong side. It is

a ^2 - 2a + 1 - 16f^2

Not being picky here. Many teachers will deduct for things like that.

Is this what you want?

That is cute but do not worry. The brain is not a hand grenade, nor is it a cannon ball. Like any other muscle it needs exercise. You have a brain sprain.

I will work on your problem.

Factor the polynomial using the method for factoring a perfect square trinomial. It may be necessary to factor out a common factor first.
