when you find solution of x^2-1=0 it is the same as looking for those valus of x for which the value of y in the function y=x^2-1 is equal to 0.
the same with your problem.we have to find all values of x for which y=0.and because y=0 we have to search for intersections of your graph with the x-axis...(remember the ordered pair (x,0) is on the x-axis).
