Re: Probability

That is right, very good. Of course you cannot get exactly 2.5 heads in 5 tosses. But it is an average, like the average number of kids per family is 2.3

Re: Probability

but cant it be  5*(2/5) and 5*(3/5) because the probability of throwing was 2/5 and 3/5 ?

Re: Probability

That was an empirical or experimentally derived probability. If you do not know the theoretical one then yes, use that. That is why you get it, to use it.

Re: Probability

1. Flip a coin 5 times and record the outcomes here.

p(h)=3/5

p(t)= 2/5

2. Start again. Flip the coin 25 times and keep track of the outcomes. Record them here.
p(h)=15/25

p(t)=10/25

3. Verify that the sum of the experimental probabilities of flipping heads or tails add up to 1. Check both sets of your data. Show your work.

They do add up to one for my first one 3/5+2/5=1

15/25+10/25=1

did i solve these right ?

Re: Probability

4. Did you notice that your experimental data from question 2 was closer to the theoretical probability than your data from question 1? Explain briefly using your data to support your answer.

this is confuuuuuusing

Hi anonimnystefy;

Yes, that is true.

Hi zee-f;

Didn't the second question have more throws?

So would you not expect it to be a better predictor of the real probability of 1 / 2?

Re: Probability

Sorry, a little to advanced for just this second.

Question 4) just asks you to observe something. It does not ask you to draw any conclusions. So what do you observe when you toss the coin more times?
