Re: Solving Rational Equations

When I get stuck on any problem I try some numbers to get a feel for what I am trying to understand.

Supposing and bear with me, you used 50 quarts of A and 50 quarts of B. What would your mixture be?

Re: Solving Rational Equations

Hi zee-f;

If D is A = 30 and B = 60 then I like it also. But that is not what I asked you to do. Please look at #52 again.

i was wondering if this equation can do in this

(present A)*(amount A)+(presentB)*(amount B)= (final%)*(final amount)

Re: Solving Rational Equations

Hold on you are jumping ahead. Let's do one thing at a time.

Call x the amount of A needed.
Call y the amount of b needed.

50 quarts of A means 50 (.18)
50 quarts of B means 50 (.24)

50 (.18) = 9 quarts of fat
50 (.24) = 12 quarts of fat

Understand up to here?

Because it is easy to calculate! I know it violates one of the conditions of the question but we are just experimenting.

Strong advice for everyone:

Do not mix the "times sign" with the algebraic operations/expressions.

Keep the "times sign" within arithmetic.

Keep the "times sign" out of algebra.

Instead, use a multiplication dot or grouping symbols for the multiplication.

zee-f,

when solving any equation where the variable is in a denominator,
make sure you omit any (candidate) solutions that would cause
one (or more) denominators to equal zero, because those would
make the value of those algebraic fractions undefined.

They are a little bit harder but with practice you can get them.
Did you see the solution in post #62? It only looks tricky but
it is not. After a while you will do them easily.

Re: Solving Rational Equations

Type A cream is 18% butterfat and type B cream is 24% butterfat. Set up a table to help you determine how many quarts of each type of cream must be used to create a 90 quart mixture that is 22% butterfat.

Call x the amount of A needed in quarts.

Call y the amount of B needed in quarts.

The first thing you can see from the problem is x + y = 90.

Re: Solving Rational Equations

so

x(9/50)+y(6/25)=11/50?

or
x(9/50)+y(6/25)=90

Re: Solving Rational Equations

Hold on, one step at a time. You have two variables so you need to equations
to solve for them.

So scaling the coefficients we get:

Which verifies your solution.

Can you now solve that set of simultaneous equations?

Re: Solving Rational Equations

First simplify the first equation by using algebra.

Subtract 22 y from both sides.

Subtract 18x from both sides:

Divide by 2:

Now you have the simpler set.

Correct. So if you mix 30 quarts of A with 60 quarts of B you will have a 22% solution of butterfat.
