Baffler #4
Batches of 15 steel balls are given to you. 14 of them are exactly alike. One ball is slightly heavier in each batch. You have a two pan balance that you can use to weigh the balls against each other. As the plant manager you are given the job of designing a method to find the heavier ball in each batch. Each weighing of any group of balls is considered one move. What is the average number of moves to determine the heavier ball for each batch?

hi Sylvia
i don't agree.what if the difference in weight is very minimal? You sometimes are not able to feel the weight difference.

Hi anonimnystefy;
You are missing the point. She has a point. gAr is fine in this instance. The unique solution is for me.

Forgive me for being reticent on the point because I am having deja vu. This is very delicate.
What I can say is Sylvia has caught me on a technicality. She is perfectly right in pointing out the questions flaws and exploiting them. As a matter of fact she reminds me of an old friend of mine here at MIF.

Sorry, but I must disagree. Mathematics is tough enough without having to deal with imprecise questions. That is what is wrong with the logic question in the other thread and why the answer given there is still incorrect in my opinion. For this question I should have included the phrase you must use the balance for the weighing.

New question:
A plane is flying above the earth at 41000 ft. It mysteriously crashes and all evidence is destroyed. The neighboring country is known to be hostile and has ground based particle weapons that can destroy aircraft but can only travel in straight lines.
If we drop a line from the planes position to the surface of the earth that is perpendicular to it the particle weapon is located 161 miles away along the surface of the earth from that point.
Could the plane have been destroyed by the particle beam?
