You may try linux mint if you don't like ubuntu's interface.
Also, you can boot linux distros from usb flash drives using unetbootin.

Wine allows you to install windows software to linux. I used for a couple of programs and it worked fine.

No, I did not try the latest ubuntu, 9.10 was the last one I used. After that they messed with the interface I liked.
I started using the ubuntu derivative after that.
What do you think of ubuntu?

They have retained the Gnome 2, I like it.
Other than that, it has most of the softwares and codecs I frequently use, so I can directly boot the flash drive into any computer and use the way I want to.

There are other desktop environments like lcde, xfce etc, but haven't tried those yet.
