any other way to unlock password protected rar files....

is there any other way to unlock password of rar files other than brute force attack as it is very time consuming.....else if bf is the only way suggest me some free tools to do that....
i have a giant 2.6 GB rar file whose password i     don't know....
it came with a link which asked me to complete a survey but it is too confusing that even my friends wasn't able to complete....:( my friend took a lot of time and money to download the file.:(

There is a program but I would not expect too much if the guy who encoded it has a brain.

I suppose you got it from a torrent.
Even if you manage to crack the password, it may not actually have the data you expect.
Never download huge compressed files, unless you're sure it's not password protected.

Re: any other way to unlock password protected rar files....

Unless there is a serious security flaw in the encryption scheme or the encoder has used a stupid passwords, cracking it will take months.

I think there is a program that can brute RAR archives for passwords. Look it up using a search engine. Kali Linux probably has such a tool included.  Run a dictionary attack first.. If you really need to bruteforce it, see that it is GPU accelerated.

I do not know about the RAR compression scheme or the file structure but I do not think it has any serious flaws.

Why did you spend a lot of time and money on some content which came with some survey? What do you expect the encrypted content to be?

Usually on the page where the downloads are there is a link. It uses a dictionary attack and a few other simple ideas. It is not very good if the guy used a strong password.

You are spending your money and time the wrong way.

Hey, downloading is an iffy business. You take the good with the bad.

Re: any other way to unlock password protected rar files....

Try the program also try the name of the uploader or the site. Sometimes they use those as a password.

Google the file name. Another site may be hosting your file and the password may be there.

Also, check the page where you downloaded it from thoroughly.

Re: any other way to unlock password protected rar files....

As a rule of thumb, read the comments before downloading!

Google the file name. Other pages may be hosting that file as I said. They may have a password.
