I really need help. I wrote out an equation but couldn't solve correctly.
Bob has x dollars now. If Pat gives Bob a dollar, Bob will have twice as many dollars as Pat. If Bob gave Pat a dollar instead, they both will have the same number of dollars. What is the value of x?
Hi;
Let p be the number of dollars Pat has and x = the number of dollars Bob has:
x + 1 = 2 p
p + 1 = x
solving we get p = 2 and x = 3.
In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

If Pat gives Bob a dollar, Bob will have twice as many dollars as Pat.
7 + 1 ≠ 2 * 5

Why? If Pat gives Bob a dollar, Pat will have 4 dollars left, not 5.

Sorry, my fault. I caused the confusion. I guess in my world giving a dollar does not decrease your totals. No wonder my checkbook never balances.
Elaina, I am sorry. I wrote the problem down from memory instead of copying it and left out some important parts. Then I gave it to you causing you to get the same wrong answer I did. I do apologize.
