What were computers invented for, then?
That is one of the first reasons but the other side was using them for a much more ghastly purpose.
But the very, very, very first use was done by good ole Charlie Babbage. Him and Ada were going to use it compute difference tables.

The attack on the Enigma machine was actually begun before that by a group of Polish mathematicians. Alan was the first guy to use a computer to implement those ideas.

Yes, there is a great book by Hodges that describes in some detail Alan's work and story.

Transmissions to the Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht and the Navy were all sent in code. The code was generated by the Enigma machine.
