I found \mbox working. Probably I had a different problem.

I have learnt by experience. Earlier I used to submit immediately after writing. I had ignored "preview". the result was when came to edit the spacing etc were not visible. Once I started preview. I could edit easily.

How to write a degree symbol in LaTeX without copying the symbol in this forum's banner or making o, O, 0, or \circ as an exponent?

You mean they are different? Sometimes, they write additional packages to add commands but like all languages it is basically the same everywhere.
