5 / 12 is bigger than 1/sqrt(6), so the two points that are in that subsquare are closer than 5 / 12 together because the maximum possible distance between them is 1/sqrt(6).
In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

I posted my comment since I got the value of 5/12 .But I am not convinced. If the 12 items are placed at the center of each rectangle the minimum distance comes to 1/4 and not correct. if I start from one corner I can only place 10 items at distance of 5/12. There also it fails. going away from this problem, if I had divided 1x1 m square into 9 smaller squares I would be able to place 12 items at minimum distance of 1/3 m or 8 items at minimum distance of
